From Karl Johnson
“The Call of the Wild”, A Waldorf Wilderness Education Conference, beckons you to come feed your soul in the beauty of Southwest Colorado, gain new skills, and learn how to develop outdoor education wilderness programs in your school.
Led by Karl Johnson and Craig Rubens, longtime Waldorf Educators and longtime advocates and leaders of outdoor education in the Waldorf movement in North America, this unique conference will explore how to support the growth of young people through meaningful adventures in wild places.
Deer Hill Expeditions, in Mancos, Colorado, is pleased to be hosting this Waldorf Wilderness Education Conference this July 21st-27th. Deer Hill has previously hosted Waldorf Grades Conferences at its beautiful Base Camp and they are excited to have the Waldorf community come back to the Four Corners Region for this conference. Deer Hill has also led over 250 wilderness programs and culminating class trips for more than 50 Waldorf schools over the past 20 years.
Beginning at the Deer Hill Base Camp, this conference will focus on ways to connect young people to themselves, others, and the Earth. Drawing on Anthroposophical insights, "The Call of the Wild" Conference will explore ways that wilderness education supports the whole and healthy development of adolescent students and helps them as they step towards the threshold of young adulthood.
After a day and a half of focused presentations, movement, music and artistic work, the conference will then actually shoulder backpacks and head up into the Colorado high-country of the magnificent San Juan Mountains to experience first-hand how to organize a wilderness trip for young people with emphasis on safety and risk management, "Leave No Trace: camping ethics, initiative games, backcountry skills, and evening "talking circle" topics. Weather permitting, the group will climb a nearly 14, 000 foot mountain.
Four days and three nights later, the conference will return to Deer Hill for closing sweat lodge, banquet, final activities and plenum. With the richness of having experienced an actual wilderness trip, the conference will culminate with practical program development skills that can be brought back to the schools. There is vision of continuing this conference through a series of conferences with the theme for the next year being on organizing whitewater river trips for young people.
