Dear Friends of Storytelling and Puppetry Arts,

I am filled with joyful anticipation as my colleagues and I plan the 4th Bi-Annual East Coast Collaborative Puppetry Arts Conference. It will take place this year in Hawthorne Valley, an anthroposophically based community, Waldorf School, and Biodynamic farm situated in the rolling hills and forests of the Hudson Valley in upstate New York.

Our central theme will be on transformation... and story. What enables us to enter the very core of being and emerge with wings? How can we use story and puppetry arts to support the transformative potential of education?

There will be the sharing of stories that have inspired and changed us...
We will also focus on our deepening work with the “craeft of the puppet”. “Craeft” is the old English terminology for the honing of skill and knowledge that transforms materials into artistic usefulness. Through craeft we ensoul the physical world with creative will. Workshops in storytelling, plant dying, felting, the making of birds and trees, scenery tableaus, colored light and shadow, marionette manipulation, and performance art will be offered.

Our conference opens in the evening of Wednesday July 25th with a presentations by Nancy Mellon and Jennifer Aguirre. We will offer an optional meditational walk in nature each morning. The days are to be filled with conference exploration and discussions, workshop options, and artistic collaboration. In the cool of the evening we will share performances from conference participants.

A public performance and a puppetry craft fair will be featured on Sundayafternoon for our local community. If you have items to offer at the fair we welcome you to bring them along. We will end our conference by 12:30pm on Monday, July 30th after a closing plenum and luncheon.

Whether you are a beginning or experienced puppeteer, a teacher, an artist, or an explorer, we hope you will join us! Conference fee discounts are offered for those who bring a performance to share. We also have work scholarships available for those who inquire before June 30th.

With warm welcome and best wishes,
Janene Ping
