The research project Anthroposophical Spiritual Science and the Public explores Rudolf Steiner’s work and worldwide reception.
Efforts are being made by the General Anthroposophical Section in cooperation with all other Sections of the School of Spiritual Science and affiliated anthroposophical institutions and scientists, to correct the largely distorted image of the spiritual scientist Rudolf Steiner and anthroposophy as a science of the spirit. This is being done with a view to the year 2025, the centenary of Rudolf Steiner’s death, which will attract public attention, but also beyond that. Various initiatives have been prepared and started for this purpose, but people and funding are still needed to successfully carry out and complete them.
1 Worldwide overview of translated courses and writings. As presented at a meeting of all anthroposophically oriented publishers at the Goetheanum on 5 and 6 June and via international video conference on 12 June, we aim to prepare and make available a first overview of all writings and lecture courses by Rudolf Steiner that have been translated and published so far in all languages around the world. The extent to which Rudolf Steiner as an individual scientist and author has been translated and studied globally during his lifetime and in the decades following his death is unique. In collaboration with co-workers in many countries, we aim by 30 March 2025 to establish an overview that will be continually extended, updated and improved.
2 Overview of biographies of Rudolf Steiner and his work. For the 100th anniversary of Rudolf Steiner’s death, we also plan a synopsis of all reputable biographies and comprehensive studies of the development of Rudolf Steiner’s work that have been created and published in various countries on the basis of scientific study and research.
3 Selected basic writings. On the homepage of the General Anthroposophical Section selected basic writings by Rudolf Steiner will in future be listed, accompanied by an image of the first edition (cover) and manuscript pages, information on the origin of the work, preliminary stages and on the work process. Concise summaries of content and references to secondary literature will follow.
Once this work is complete, we plan to present basic concepts of anthroposophical spiritual science – such as destiny (karma), individuality, freedom, astral body, ‘I’ etc. – in their specific anthroposophical meaning and in the context of and relation to the philosophical-anthroposophical discourse.
4 Scientific breakthroughs. The Goetheanum Leadership is preparing a publication that will use selected examples from different specialized areas to illustrate scientific breakthroughs in the 20th and 21st century that were inspired by recommendations concerning content or method made by Rudolf Steiner (an example of this put forward emphatically by Rudolf Steiner himself was Lilly Kolisko’s pioneering work*).
